Equity and diversity must be prioritised in fire restructure

Following today’s announcement that the Victorian Government plans to restructure the state’s fire agencies, Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commissioner Kristen Hilton said that the evidence essential to the cultural reform of the Country Fire Authority (CFA) and Melbourne Fire Brigade (MFB) will be delivered in the coming weeks.

"Last year the Victorian Government requested the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission conduct an Independent Equity and Diversity Review of the CFA and the MFB," Commissioner Hilton said.

"As noted by the Premier, cultural reform requires consideration of the Commission’s findings into the drivers and impact of any discrimination, sexual harassment and victimisation, including addressing key barriers to real equity and diversity in any new agencies.

"The Commission will report its findings in the coming weeks.

"We look forward to working with the Victorian Government to ensure that cultural reform of the agencies is prioritised throughout this restructure."
