A win against racism

I am very pleased to see the outcome of Kwenda Obudho's case against a Melbourne nightclub. A Victorian Supreme Court judgment has found that Mr Obudho was indeed the victim of racial discrimination.

While the headline 'Sex cases soar' may not seem like for good news for Victoria Police, the rise in complaints is an indication that more women members are speaking up about their mistreatment and that is absolutely a step in the right direction. 

The Commission is very pleased to announce the new Disability Reference Group members for 2016-18.

Celebrating at Midsumma Carnival 2017

Commission staff members had another fantastic day at the annual Midsumma Carnival event on Sunday 15 January. Our stall saw lots of foot traffic, giving us great opporunities to chat with community members about the issues that are important to them, as well as the work we do to tackle discrimination.

The Commission has provided a submission on the Exposure Draft of the Marriage Amendment (Same-Sex Marriage) Bill.

Human rights upheld as court dismisses appeal

The Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission has welcomed the Court of Appeal’s confirmation today that the transfer of children from Parkville and Malmsbury Youth Justice and Remand Centres to Barwon Prison was unlawful.

The Commission has today made a submission into the Federal Parliamentary inquiry into freedom of speech in Australia, calling for the existing federal racial discrimination laws to be maintained and protected.

Victorian court upholds children’s human rights
