New resource for access to Auslan in hospitals

The Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission today launched Signs for Health, an online resource to help deaf, hard of hearing and deafblind patients better access the health care they need and have a right to under law.

Report on the operation of the Charter released

The 2015 report on the operation of Victoria’s Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities was tabled on 11 October 2016. It examines the use of the Charter in Victorian courts and tribunals, in parliament, by government and in the community in 2015. 

You are invited to the launch of Signs for Health, a resource for improving Auslan and communication access in hospitals for staff and deaf, hard of hearing or deafblind patients, on 19 October.

The 34th Victorian Seniors Festival will see more than 1500 free or low cost events take place across Victoria during the month of October.

Equal Pay Day is a reminder of gender inequality

Today is Equal Pay Day, which marks the extra time from the end of the financial year that women have to work in order to earn the same amount as men.

We often think about discrimination due to being a parent as an issue that only affects women. Almost half of all mothers report workplace discrimination at some point, but recent studies have shown men who take paternity leave or try to negotiate workplace flexibility also suffer negatively at work.

The Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission welcomes the commencement of the Adoption Amendment (Adoption by Same-Sex Couples) Bill 2015 (Vic), which allows couples to adopt regardless of their sex or gender identity.

The Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission welcomes changes to Victoria’s Equal Opportunity Act 2010 which will further protect people from discrimination when seeking employment at religious schools and organisations.
