Supporting students with disabilites in schools

The Department of Education and Training (DET) has provided the Commission with an update on the ongoing implementation of recommendations from the Commission's report Held Back: the experiences of students with disabilities in Victorian schools.

Since the report's release in September 2012, the Commission has been working closely with DET and others to improve accessibility for the state's most vulnerable students.

The Commission has also worked together with the Australian Council of Human Rights Authorities (ACHRA) to provide a submission to the Senate Standing Committee on Education and Employment's Inquiry into current levels of access and attainment for students with disability in the school system.

The submission provides information on observed patterns in complaints and other observations from ACHRA members relating to students with disabilities.

The submission also makes a number of recommendations relating to participation and making adjustments, personalised learning and support and building workforce capacity to support students with disabilities.
