Commission welcomes new resource for people with communication difficulties to report abuse

The Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission welcomes the new resource, Speak Up and be Safe From Abuse, supported by the Victorian Government and developed by Scope’s Communication and Inclusion Resource Centre in 2016.

Speak Up and be Safe from Abuse is a toolkit for people with communication difficulties to assist them in identifying and reporting abuse. It includes a set of communication boards, fact sheets, posters and a contacts list for people who need immediate help.

The Commission has previously researched the experiences of people with disabilities reporting crime, including crime occurring in Victorian services systems, in its report Beyond Doubt; the experiences of people with disabilities reporting crime. The Commission welcomes the new Speak Up and be Safe From Abuse resource, which aligns closely to the Commission’s recommendations in Beyond Doubt to ensure service staff and their clients can recognise and report abuse occurring in disability services.
